Couples and Marital Counseling

Marriage counseling can also help couples who plan to get married. Premarital counseling can help couples achieve a deeper understanding of each other and iron out differences before marriage. In other cases, couples seek marriage counseling to improve a troubled relationship.

In other cases, couples seek marriage counseling to improve a troubled relationship. What to expect here is what to expect from marriage counseling. The goal depends on you. Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration, and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives. Psychiatric rehabilitation services are collaborative, person-directed, and individualized. These services are an essential element of the health care and human services spectrum and should be evidence-based. They focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning, and social environments of their choice.

The Mission

Psychiatric rehabilitation is to enable best practices of illness management, psychosocial functioning, and personal satisfaction. Treatments and practices towards this are guided by principles. There are seven strategic principles.

  • Normal life promotion
  • Advocacy for structural modifications for improved access to pharmacological and psycho-social support services
  • Person-centered treatment.
  • Actively involving support systems.
  • Coordination of effective and efficient care
  • Strength-based approach.
  • Rehabilitation isn't time specific but goal specific in succeeding.

Telehealth

Staying healthy and safe is more important now than ever. But in the middle of a pandemic, shelter-in-place orders, and social distancing, it’s been challenging for many people to visit their primary care doctors for minor health problems. As hospitals and emergency rooms continue to overflow with coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, a visit to either can be a scary thought.

What is telehealth?

Telehealth is the use of digital information and communication technologies, such as computers and mobile devices, to access health care services remotely and manage your health care. These may be technologies you use from home or that your doctor uses to improve or support health care services.

Does telehealth protect my privacy?

Yes. Insurance plans and healthcare providers are subject to HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rules, which establish national guidelines to ensure your personal health data won’t be disclosed without your knowledge. When you communicate with your doctor via phone or video, your privacy and medical record information are held to the same standards as regular in-person visits.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling / Addiction Support Groups

What are Drug and alcohol support groups?

The concept of support groups, which are also sometimes called self-help groups and mutual support groups, involves peers discussing issues and offering emotional validation and self-care tips, with guidance from a leader who is not a professional doctor or therapist.

How do support groups work?

Support groups are typically small. They meet on a regular basis, usually once or twice per week, to discuss issues that have come up in that time and review new thoughts on the concerns brought up from the previous meeting. It is important to note, however, that support groups are not a replacement for therapy. Working with a therapist and attending a support group at the same time, especially for mental health issues associated with addiction, is the best combination for long-term recovery.

Why are support groups important?
  • The individual is surrounded by likeminded, healthy peers; from before rehabilitation may still struggle with addiction or may trigger relapse.
  • The individual can voice their concerns, struggles, and fears without judgment.
  • The individual gets “healthy peer pressure” from the group to focus on sobriety and overall wellbeing.
  • The individual has new friends and confidantes that can be reached in the event of a personal crisis.

Pain Management

What is pain management?

Addressing pain involves the use of medications and therapeutic interventions to alleviate discomfort stemming from surgical procedures, injuries, or illnesses. Pain, when unmanaged, can exert profound effects on both your physical and emotional well-being, potentially leading to conditions like depression and sleep disturbances. The implementation of pain management strategies aims to facilitate rest, support the healing process, and facilitate a return to everyday activities. Furthermore, effective pain management has the potential to enhance crucial aspects of your life, including appetite, sleep quality, energy levels, mood, and interpersonal relationships.

What are the types of pain?
  • Abrupt in onset, acute pain is transient, typically subsiding as the body undergoes healing. However, if left untreated, it may evolve into a chronic condition. The pain usually goes away as your body heals, but may become chronic if it is not treated.
  • Chronic pain lasts a long time or grows worse. It may last for months or years due to a Enduring for an extended period or intensifying over time, chronic pain may persist for months or even years, often stemming from an underlying chronic condition. It can linger beyond recovery from an injury or illness.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Addiction and the recovery process are commonly marked by strong cravings to use even after the successful completion of detox and treatment. These cravings, a normal occurrence for those struggling to get and stay clean, can interfere with treatment and increase the risk of relapse. Fortunately, certain medications have proven very successful in helping to stave off these cravings and promoting abstinence.

Protocol for use of MAT

If you decide to enter an addiction treatment program, you will undergo an intake evaluation by a mental health professional. This intake evaluation will have 3 main goals:

  • Properly diagnose the substance use disorder.
  • Evaluate the severity of the addiction.
  • Assess for the presence of any co-occurring mental and physical health problems.

Once staff assesses your condition they will decide whether you are a good candidate for medication-assisted treatment. Per SAMHSA, you are a good candidate for MAT if you:

  • Have an official diagnosis of an addiction to alcohol or opioids.
  • Are willing to fully comply with prescribing instructions.
  • Lack of physical health issues that the medication could possibly exacerbate.
  • Are fully educated on alternative options.
Treatment doesn’t stop with medication

Medication alone is not enough to help a patient achieve and maintain abstinence in the long term.

Effective addiction treatment addresses the whole person and combines the use of:

  • Evidence-based behavioral therapies.
  • Education.
  • Relapse prevention programs.
  • Medication

Use of medications can help the patient to remain clean while the behavioral therapies address underlying issues related to substance abuse, help to promote a positive self-image, rectify negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and teach and build healthy coping skills. This therapeutic combination is at the core of medication-assisted treatment.

Treatment doesn’t stop with medication

Taking medications alone is not sufficient to help patients be more clean and sober in the long term. For effective addiction support, treatment should address the whole person through the combination of the following:

  • Behavioral therapy
  • Health education and promotion
  • Relapse-focused programs
  • Medication management

Furthermore, the use of medications is an effective tool in helping patients remain clean, while behavioral therapy focuses on the treatment of any underlying issues that have affected substance abuse. Additionally, therapy promotes positivity and self-reliance; addresses negativity, including thoughts, emotions, and attitude; and builds and practices healthy coping mechanisms. The combination of therapy and medication lies at the core of medication-assisted treatment programs.
